Alice in Chains have returned with their first new song in 5 years, ‘The One You Know‘. It is the first single off their forthcoming 6th album due out later this year. Check it out below.
It is everything you’d expect from the Seattle veterans, flying out of the gates with that signature Cantrell tone and Alice in Chains’ always impressive dual vocal attack. At first listen, it sounds a lot like the intro to ‘Sick, Sick, Sick’ by Queens of the Stone Age before it goes vintage Alice in Chains. Slow and dirty, like always.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell sat down recently with Guitar World Magazine where he opens up about the new album:
“It’s not that we were keeping it a secret—we just didn’t want to say a whole lot about it until we had something to say. And we certainly have something to say with this one. It’s a fucking strong record.”
The as yet untitled album recently wrapped recording and is currently being mixed by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Coheed and Cambria). Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones, Stone Sour) produced it with the band at Bad Animals in Seattle, the same studio they recorded the 1995 self titled album.
When detailing the sound of the new album, Cantrell makes sure he’s covering all spectrums.
“It’s a record we haven’t done yet, I can tell you that,” he says. “But it’s also a record that has all the elements of anything you would expect from us. It’s got our fingerprint. And we’re really proud of the material that we wrote and the performances we captured. There’s some really heavy shit, some really ugly stuff, some real beautiful stuff, some weirdo trippy shit… it’s good!”
Whatever it ends up sounding like, if ‘The One You Know’ is anything to go by it will be another crushing release by the band.
