Currently on tour in Australia for the Groovin’ The Moo festival, Grammy winning act Portugal. The Man have cancelled an appearance on Sunrise due to controversy around the program.
“We were scheduled to appear on Sunrise tomorrow morning but we have decided, as a band, that we do not want to be part of that show at this time. We come from rural Alaska and hold very close to our hearts the indigenous people of our home.
While we are by no means experts in your countries history we know there are problems that, like ours, are yet to be resolved and only being amplified by the recent statements on Sunrise. Uncle Allen Madden will be welcoming us all to our show in Sydney tonight. With love and respect, Australia ”
A Channel 7 spokesperson said Portugal. The Man told Sunrise on Tuesday evening it was cancelling it’s scheduled performance.
“We respect the band’s decision and wish them well on the remainder of their Australian tour,”
The band’s decision follows months of protests resulting from a segment on Sunrise in which a panel discussed the adoption of indigenous children from abusive homes by white families.
During the segment, the presenter said children’s minister David Gillespie had proposed white families should be able to adopt indigenous children to save them from rape, assault and neglect.
Later, Mr Gillespie said he had not used the phrase “white families”.
